Supporting Your People Starts with Staying Ahead of Change

From 6 April 2026, the UK and Northern Ireland will implement its most significant overhaul of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in decades — a shift that transforms both employee protection and employer responsibility. These new rules are designed to create fairer, healthier workplaces, and our team is here to help you navigate them with ease.

Here’s what’s changing — and why forward‑thinking organisations are preparing now.

Day‑One Statutory Sick Pay

Employees will now receive SSP from the very first day of illness, with the three‑day waiting period removed.
This reduces financial stress for your workforce and encourages responsible sickness absence, supporting healthier teams.

Every Employee Now Qualifies

The Lower Earnings Limit is being scrapped, meaning part‑time, low‑earning and flexible workers are all covered.
Over 1.3 million people who were previously excluded will now qualify for SSP — widening employer obligations across all sectors.

A New Fair‑Pay Calculation Model

From April 2026, SSP will be calculated as the lower of:

  • 80% of an employee’s average weekly earnings, or
  • the statutory flat rate (£123.25 for 2026/27

For businesses with variable‑hours staff or large part‑time teams, this is a major shift in pay management and compliance.
